Being involved in organizations allows us students to practice different skills that we might not necessarily learn in our classrooms. In my case, I was fortunate enough to be the Treasurer of the American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME) - Wichita State Chapter. This position allowed me practice leadership and professionalism towards my peers as well as industry partners while having fun and making new friends.
That being said our chapter鈥檚 executive board was invited to an all expenses paid trip for a Student Leadership Weekend in Dallas. The budget included food, gas, and of course a night of stay on the conference鈥檚 venue. This opportunity allowed us to meet other chapters of ASME and build connections with students that will be future leaders in our industry.
Additionally, the conference was inspiring and insightful. I got to learn different marketing and management skills that focuses on growth and development of successful teams within organizations .This event also had several activities for us to learn more about setting goals and how to achieve them as well as perspective on how other chapters were running their organizations.
Despite what may seem a busy weekend, I still had fun exploring a small part of Dallas. We had great food and built even more connections while strengthening the bond of our executive team. Thus, if you are not in an organization yet, join one! These types of opportunities are available all throughout Wichita State. So, make sure to take advantage of it.
