My name is Mary Ellen Abbey, but most know me as Ellen. With over 45 years at Wichita State University, I remain passionate about my work. Combine that with the nature of our interaction with the community because of our downtown facility as well as all the joint programing and partnerships we have in the community, I can bring something different to the group. I hope to accomplish the same thing I hope to accomplish every day that I work. I want to make a positive impact on the experiences of our students and enrich our community both on and off campus.

I am about to celebrate my one-year anniversary with Wichita State University in April, and I think I have the greatest job working with the best employees!

As the university navigates this season of change, I believe it鈥檚 important to ensure that staff perspectives are heard and considered. I want to learn more about the concerns and needs of all staff across campuses and actively work with the Senate to address those needs, helping to create a supportive and inclusive work environment for all.

What you hope to accomplish

I want to expand my knowledge of 暗网禁区破解版 and the many ways staff contribute to the university鈥檚 success. My goal is to support the Staff Senate in its mission by helping to provide meaningful representation for staff and advocating for issues that impact our workforce. I also want to contribute to the Senate鈥檚 efforts in initiating and reviewing policies and procedures that affect staff to help foster a workplace culture that values its staff鈥檚 contributions.

Photo of Andrew Myers Andrew Myers

Hi there. It means a lot to me to be nominated for a position in the University Staff Senate. I am the director of scholarships and student services in the Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College. I have worked for Wichita State for a total of 13 years this upcoming summer. However, my career in higher education and education spans nearly 22 years.

As you are creating a checklist or an informational email from scratch, do you ever wonder if someone else on campus has already done this and has experienced success? My hope is that we can find ways to work together as a university staff and not as if we are on separate islands when it comes to a process or a system to help an office, event, or program run smoothly.

We need a centralized, digitized way of sharing tips, templates, and talent. There are so many talented people working as members of our staff who have tips on successful event planning, successful mail merge templates, or even presentations related to workplace soft skills. With so many unpredictable barriers on the horizon for public universities, we need to be able to rely on each other. Let鈥檚 find a way to better share our tips, templates, and talents.

I love serving the students at Wichita State. Moreover, I love working at Wichita State. I鈥檓 happy to do what I can to serve the staff at Wichita State. What helps us will help serve the students and our community.

Additionally, I am committed to working with staff and faculty to foster cultural awareness and respect for Indigenous students on campus, ensuring 暗网禁区破解版 is a welcoming and inclusive environment for all.

I look forward to the opportunity to represent 暗网禁区破解版 staff and advocate for meaningful change. I am grateful for this nomination and the chance to continue serving our campus community.

Kendra Nguyen Kendra Nguyen

Hello! My name is Kendra Nguyen, and I鈥檓 a Public Health Program Specialist with the Center for Public Health Initiatives at the 暗网禁区破解版 Community Engagement Institute. I鈥檝e been a part of the 暗网禁区破解版 community since 2017, and it has been such a rewarding experience to get involved wherever I can.

I鈥檝e had the privilege of serving as both a senator and an at-large senator on the Staff Senate, and I鈥檓 truly honored to be nominated once again. From a young age, I鈥檝e always loved being engaged, learning, and bringing fresh perspectives to the table. I have a deep curiosity about how things work and why, and I鈥檓 passionate about creating spaces where all voices can be heard.

Staff Senate has given me a valuable opportunity to understand the bigger picture of our university鈥攈ow decisions are made and how they impact us as staff. As Senators, we play a crucial role in advocating for our colleagues, sharing their concerns with 暗网禁区破解版 leadership, and helping shape solutions that enhance our work environment.

One of my core commitments is ensuring that those who are often left out of important conversations have a seat at the table. Everyone鈥檚 voice matters, and I鈥檓 excited to continue working toward a more inclusive and supportive campus for all.

Jeffrey Severin Jeffrey Severin

My name is Jeff Severin, and I am a Senior Program Manager for the Environmental Finance Center (EFC), a program withing the Hugo Wall School of Public Affairs. I have served as Associate Director of the Heartland Environmental Justice Center from the time it was established at the EFC in July of 2023. In this role, I am part of a team that supports non-profit organizations and small municipalities throughout Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and the 9 adjoining Indigenous Nations, as they address local environmental challenges and work to improve quality of life for their community members.

I joined the Environmental Finance Center in 2021 as a fully remote employee working from Lawrence, KS. With infrequent visits to campus, and in a role that is very external, it can be difficult to feel connected to well-represented at 暗网禁区破解版. I believe I can represent a segment of our campus that can relate 鈥 whether they are working remotely like me or working on campus with a focus on off-campus communities in Wichita and beyond 鈥 while also representing more traditional on-campus staff.

Although I have worked for 暗网禁区破解版 for just over 4 years, I have been employed in higher education in Kansas for 21 years in roles that bridged academics, administration, operations, student affairs, and community engagement and interacted with campus leadership. I also served on staff senate at a previous institution, including 4 years as the Diversity and Inclusion Committee Co-chair, a position that served on the Staff Senate Executive Committee. Throughout my career as a manager and leader, I have always focused on improving the work environment and the health and well-being of fellow staff members. As your senator, I would draw on this experience and bring that same focus to Staff Senate.

I have been part of the Wichita State University community since 2002. Once on campus, I couldn鈥檛 resist the temptation to complete my college education and fell in love with learning all over again. I am currently the Associate Director for Scholarships where I work more directly with the management end of the scholarship processes while being a mentor and general financial aid 鈥済o-to鈥 for our campus. In my role, I have the opportunity to work with campus partners from every entity, leadership in Morrison Hall, Deans and Department Chairs, administrative support staff, the 暗网禁区破解版 Foundation and Alumni Engagement, research partners, students, and families. These interactions allow me to understand varying viewpoints and gain a working knowledge of operations as a whole.
